About the Institute
The Vienna Institute of Demography strives for the combination of scientific excellence with proactive relevance in analysing and projecting demographic trends and in evaluating the social and economic consequences of population ageing. Thus the VID combines innovative methodological work with empirical analysis and communication of scientifically based insights. It gives special attention to the demography of Austria and to European comparative analysis. The Institute is embedded in the structure of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.

The task of this research group is to carry out comparative studies on European demography. Specifically of interest are the Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries.

Die Forschungsgruppe versteht sich als Kompetenzzentrum für Fragen der Bevölkerung Österreichs im nationalen und europäischen Kontext. Sie führt Forschungen zur Struktur und Entwicklung der Bevölkerung in Österreich durch und nimmt als österreichischer Partner an internationalen Netzwerke.
Population Dynamics and
Leader: Sergei Scherbov
The main task of the research group is the development and applications of statistical and computer methods and techniques in order to analyse and project the dynamics of population and its components such as fertility, mortality and migration.

The focus of our group is on the study of economic determinants and consequences of changes in population structure and dynamics. We carry out research into these complex processes using advanced methodologies drawn from several disciplines.

This research group deals with several aspects of health and ageing with a special focus on differentials in mortality and morbidity.

This research group aims at understanding the complex interaction of educational and demographic processes within the broader context of economic and social development.
