LMU Munich is divided into 18 faculties which group together major areas of teaching and research. The university has a classical academic profile ranging from the humanities and cultural sciences, law, economics, and social sciences to medicine and natural sciences.

Numerous research centers specializing either in one subject area or crossing the borders of individual disciplines as well as one of Germany’s finest library systems complete the well-differentiated research infrastructure at LMU. The Medical Center of the University of Munich provides the maximum level of care and the highest standard of treatment and nursing. With 2,300 beds, it is, next to the Charité in Berlin, the largest institution of this kind in Germany.

The diversity of research at LMU Munich depends on close collaboration with research centers far beyond the confines of the university. As a leading German university, it enjoys excellent relationships with renowned partner research institutes.

As a genuine “universitas” with a broad range of subjects, LMU Munich provides excellent conditions for innovative basic research, both within individual disciplines and through inter– and transdisciplinary collaborations across various fields of knowledge. 700 professors and 3,600 academic staff members research and teach in 18 faculties and numerous research centers.

LMU Munich’s success in the Germany-wide Excellence Initiative has confirmed the university’s outstanding research record, particularly in the field of fundamental research. However, the competitive position of LMU Munich is also shown by the fact that it is regularly rated at the top end of national and international rankings. Research funding is a critical factor in a university’s success and a significant indicator of the strength of its research. LMU Munich attracts a wide range of research funding at regional, national, and European levels. Key sources of research funding are the German Research Foundation (DFG) and the European Union.

By implementing university-wide strategy processes, LMU Munich has succeeded in permanently enhancing its profile as a research-intensive university.
