Inter-University Centre Dubrovnik (UIC) is an independent international institution for advanced studies structured as a consortium of universities with a mission to organise and promote contact and exchange through projects, study programmes, courses and conferences across a wide range of scientific concerns. Programme directors and resource persons coming from about 170 member universities worldwide cooperate in organising the activities. IUC is open to new member institutions as well as to new programmes.
The Inter-University Centre, founded in 1972, is an independent, autonomous academic institution with a mission to promote international co-operation between academic institutions throughout the world.
The IUC is structured as a consortium of universities and other scientific institutions that form the centre’s policies and objectives. Each Member institution delegates one representative to the IUC Council, which is the policy-making and the highest governing body of the IUC. Council is responsible for the Constitution of the Centre, admission of new Members, establishment of fields of study and academic cooperation, budgetary matters, election of the Executive Committee and appointment of the Director General. It is chaired by Chair of the Council.
Executive Committee acts on behalf of the Council between Council meetings on the formation of the annual academic programme, acceptance of budget and financial reports and agreements and contracts with other institutions. It is chaired by Chair of the Executive Committee.
Director General is responsible for the functioning of the Centre, its academic programmes, and finances.
IUC Association provides a legal basis for the functioning of the Centre, for the personnel, premises, equipment and required funding. It was registered in November 1994 by a group of long-lasting friends in order to provide the continuity of the institution in the new legal settings of the Republic of Croatia. It is chaired by President of the Association.
All governing functions at the IUC are performed by dedicated members on voluntary basis.
Inter-University Centre has some options for supporting participants who attend IUC programmes.
- Scholarships of the Croatian Ministry of Science, Education and Sports
- Open Society Institute /Higher Education Support Programme
- Other national or institutional foundations supporting educational programmes
However, besides these scholarship options, we encourage participants to explore possibilities of finding support for international educational programmes at their home institutions, at international co-operation offices or local foundations. The IUC Secretariat will offer documents needed to facilitate the receipt of the grant.
How to become a member?
Inter-University Centre is an association of universities. The organisational structure of the IUC is such that each member university participates in the implementation of the centre’s mandate, policies and objectives. That is achieved through the functioning of the Council whose members are appointed by IUC Member universities.
Currently the IUC counts about one hundred and seventy members from all parts of the world.
Inter-University Centre is interested in strengthening its current membership network.
The procedure for applying for membership is very simple: only a letter from a university functionary should be sent to some of the IUC official (Director General, Chairman of the Council, Chair of the Executive Committee). The yearly membership fee is 500 Euro, which supports the basic IUC infrastructure. Each university appoints a representative to the IUC Council that meets every 3 – 4 years. Council is in charge for the Constitution of the IUC, admission of new Members, development of academic cooperation, appointment of other governing bodies and decisions on budgetary matters. However, Executive Committee acts on behalf of the Council in between Council meetings and provisionally approves new members.
IUC is sending regular announcements, circular information and invitations for programmes few times a year to all its members. All professors and students are welcome not only to participate in existing IUC programmes, but also to initiate new ones. IUC also offers its’ network to participants interested in a specific topic, organised within the IUC programme.
