The rapidly developing field of nanotechnologies presents many opportunities and benefits for new materials with significantly improved properties as well as revolutionary applications in the fields of energy, environment, medicine, etc. The industrial production and use of nanoparticles will be the driving force for the emerging new materials industry of the 21st century. In terms of economics, analysts have estimated that the worldwide market for nanomaterials will be 700-1000 billion € in 2011. However, the potential impact of these new materials on human health and the environment is viewed with apprehension. This new industry can only develop dynamically if these preoccupations are satisfactorily allayed.
This IP project follows up the first study supported by EC through the accompanying measure NANOSAFE funded under the 5th framework program. NANOSAFE2 project has not the pretension to solve all the problems related to nanoparticle safety but intends to treat thoroughly a limited number of reference particles and situations in order to bring the first effective industrial solutions. This project is complementary and necessary for future and running programs on nanomaterials such as: NANODERM, NANOKER, etc. NANOSAFE2 address the whole chain of nanoparticles including production, conditioning, storage, transportation, transformation into final product, during product life and at the end of product life (disposal).
NANOSAFE2 will develop innovative detection, traceability and characterization techniques for engineered nanoparticles.. Both air and liquid media will be investigated. NANOSAFE2 will create a data base on toxicology related to nanoparticles in order to collect and organize all the available knowledge from literature. Industrials will be solicited for sharing data or supporting toxicological tests for specific nanoparticles, they will provide knowledge to the consortium regarding internal test results. A methodology, based on an innovative generic technology for analyzing toxicity of such nanoparticles, will be the second major deliverable of SP2.
NANOSAFE2 will develop advanced technologies to limit both exposition to nanoparticles and leaks to environment by designing safe production equipment, handling automation, dynamic confinement, individual protection devices, filtration, etc. New procedures developped in this program will then be qualified at 3 industrial sites in the frame of the global risk management strategy proposed in NANOSAFE2.
NANOSAFE2 will evaluate both societal and environmental impacts and contribute indirectly to new legislation and standardization measures relevant for nanoparticles, by involving regulatory bodies (HSL, HVBG-BIA which are members of CEN). This project will insure a large dissemination of knowledge on nanoparticle safety by organizing workshops with world wide standards organizations, promote population awareness,academic and professional training activities.
To achieve such ambitious goals, NANOSAFE2 will bring together during 4 years European industry leaders and innovative SME's which will share their expertise in production and integration of nanoparticles for various application fields. They will be supported by research centers of internationally recognized excellence. Seven EU contries, including Slovenia, are represented within the consortium.
NANOSAFE2 reaches the critical mass required to overcome the technical barriers for breakthrough innovation in securing all the industrial nanoparticle chain and reach social acceptability of this promising industrial domain.
