Association of Art Historians (AAH)

  • Description
  • The AAH promotes the professional practice and public understanding of art history.

The Association was formed in 1974, and we currently have around 1400 active members. We are the national organisation for the discipline and serve a key role in shaping and securing the future study of art history and visual culture. Our flagship publication, Art History, is a leading academic journal word-wide. The AAH annual conference is an established, international event that provides a valuable platform for current, interdisciplinary, research and critical debate for delegates with a broad range of research and ideas.

The AAH is governed by an elected Board of Trustees and run by a small office staff.

The AAH prides itself on offering a diverse range of activities, resources and funding opportunities for members and non-members involved with art history. Our activities and events programme broadly reflects the interests and needs of the following:

Each constituency is actively involved in shaping and delivering a worthwhile AAH programme. They are represented by a committee and group Chair. If you would like to be involved in any aspect of our activities, or would like more information about the AAH, then please contact us.

    Become an AAH Member

Annual AAH Membership is open to anyone with a personal or professional interest in art history or visual culture. Membership is available to individuals and institutions. Membership includes various benefits, including discounts for events and access to funding opportunities. However, you can still attend most AAH events as a non member.

    Events and Annual Conference

The Association organises a broad range of different activities and events. These include the AAH Annual Conference and Bookfair which takes place at a different UK institution each year.

    Funding, Awards and Prizes

The AAH offers a number of financial support schemes, including various awards and prizes, that are designed to promote and develop art history education. Such funding opportunities are organised and publicised both centrally and through the relevant membership groups cited above.

    Affiliations and Concessions

The Association is affiliated with the U.S College Art Association (CAA) and supports the Comité International d'Histoire de l'Art (CIHA). We have links with other UK and international institutions and art organisations including the Scottish Society for Art History (SSAH). Many of the UK's leading museums and galleries also grant AAH members concessions on exhibitions.
