Graduate studies in León. History:
Throughout history, the province of León has always been concerned about matters of culture, and there have been many great men of science and the arts among us. The Episcopal Libraries at Astorga (10th century) and León (11th century) were famous throughout Spain. The archdeacon was made responsible for the cathedral schools at the Council of Coyanza (1050). A director of studies was appointed to be in charge of ecclesiastical studies, which in turn would give rise to the chancellor in Astorga in the 12th century, who awarded the academic degrees. In short, monasteries, convents, military orders and various foundations helped to show the people of León that they could not go to the University of Salamanca.
However, León was still without a university. Although it had the Estudio de Sahagún (14th – 17th centuries), the city nevertheless fought to obtain the foundation of a university from the 16th century (Colegio de la Compañía de Jesús and the municipal administration) and again throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.
