New Perspectives on Regulation, Governance and Learning 2012

  • Conference Call
  • We would like to invite proposals for panels or individual papers for the 2012 Conference of the Standing Group, to be held at the University of Exeter. The biennial conference is the main interdisciplinary academic conference on regulation. Conference highlights include the Giandomenico Majone Prize for the best conference paper by a junior member of the profession, as well as specialist panels, guest speakers and keynote lectures.

    Main Conference Topics

We are interested in receiving proposals relating to any aspect of the field of regulatory studies. Our main interest is to promote high-quality research, rigorous research regardless of methodological approach. We welcome proposals from:

    • Accounting
    • Anthropology
    • Economics
    • Law
    • Organizational Studies
    • Political Theory
    • Public Policy Analysis
    • Political Science
    • Sociology

    We also welcome interdisciplinary proposals.

We are seeking both theoretical-conceptual-critical papers on regulation (as mode of governance, type of policy, legal instrument, pattern of political conflict, and constitutional choice) and substantive contributions covering topics such as independent regulatory agencies, the regulation of risk, climate change and sustainability, regulatory innovations, and regulation in specific sectors of policy. Proposals on multi-level regulation and diffusion are also welcome. We are flagging up the topic of learning in the title of the conference both in relation to the progress made across social science disciplines on understanding and measuring learning and because there is an objective need to learn in an age of austerity. The costs and benefits of regulation are particularly important in years of budgetary contractions, but so are the wider effects of regulation on trust, behavior, human rights and distribution.
