74th Annual Congress 2012 German Academic Association for Business Research (VHB)
Doing business in Europe in 2012 almost always involves having to deal with employees, customers, suppliers, consultants, investors and creditors of different cultures. The European Union alone includes 27 member states with 23 official, 6 semi-official and 33 historical regional languages, not counting the hundreds of local dialects. Using language as an indicator of cultural characteristics, this amounts to more than 60 different cultural groups.
Globalisation, with its borderless and wireless knowledge transfers, is often seen as a threat to local cultures. Although the emergence of a “global culture” has been predicted for some time, it seems that local cultures are more resilient than expected. Firms doing business in Europe must thus take cultural aspects into consideration in everyday activities, for financing and investment decisions, in establishing performance measurement schemes and marketing strategies or even for financial reporting.
Through the enlargement of the EU, Europe has become an integrated economic area where even SMEs become transnational, and hence trans-cultural. Research on cross-cultural management is articulated into several fields such as cross-national comparisons, intercultural interactions and multiple-culture studies. It can focus on culture at the national level, the organisational level, as well as the sub-organisational level.
VHB 2012 will take place at the School of Economics and Management of the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy. This multi-cultural region, a microcosm of the European reality, is the perfect setting for a confrontation of ideas on cross-cultural issues in doing business in Europe.
Paper presentations are limited to 30 minutes and are restricted to papers which have never been published. Submissions should be divided into three separate documents and made electronically through the online conference management system at www.bwl2012.de:
- author details (name(s), address(es) and e-mail address(es)),
- abstract, maximum 300 words,
- complete paper.
Papers may be written in German or in English and should not exceed 25 pages. The language chosen for the written submission determines the language of presentation at the congress. Submissions will be evaluated by at least two reviewers. The papers may also be submitted to the association’s journal, Business Research. To do so, please check the box on the online submission form in order to save review time. Reviews for the conference and for the journal are carried out separately and independently.
A symposium includes papers or presentations by three to five speakers on a specific topic. Each symposium must be designed and structured by an organiser. Each symposium is scheduled for a total of 90 minutes, including 30 minutes of plenary discussion, and should be of interest to a wide audience of VHB members. Symposia are evaluated by at least two anonymous reviewers. Please submit your symposium electronically using the online conference management system at www.bwl2012.de, providing the following information in one single document:
- title of the symposium,
- organiser’s name and contact information (postal and e-mail addresses),
- speakers’ names and contact information (postal and e-mail addresses),
- abstract of not more than 250 words,
- summary of 1,500 to 2,500 words describing the symposium’s subject, objectives, contents, relevance and contribution to current knowledge,
- summaries of 500 to 1,000 words in which each speaker describes his/her contribution to the symposium,
- separate documents in which each of the speakers confirms his/her participation to the symposium.
