9th European Conference on Intellectual Capital “Intellectual Capital: Its Application in Practice” (ECIC) 2017 Lisbon

  • Conference Call
  • On behalf of the Instituto Universitário de Lisboa (ISCTE-IUL), a Portuguese Public University established in 1972, we welcome you to the 9th European Conference on Intellectual Capital (ECIC 2017). The search for new metrics and approaches to manage intellectual resources in organisations has motivated researchers to investigate how to improve the way organisations manage their intellectual capital.

The team at ISCTE-IUL, together with our partners at INDEG-IUL will ensure that the conference provides a stimulating atmosphere, in the beautiful and historic city of Lisbon, for academics and practitioners to share strategic thoughts, identify challenges, reinforce networks, and discover new trends in the field of intellectual capital research. In 2017 we would especially like to focus on the application of intellectual capital in Practice.

    About the Conference

The European Conference on Intellectual Capital was established 9 years ago and has been held in countries across Europe, including Spain, Slovakia, Finland, The Netherlands, Cyprus and Italy. The conference is generally attended by participants from more than 25 countries and attracts an interesting mix of academic scholars, practitioners and individuals who are engaged in various aspects of Intellectual Capital research.

A number of journals including the Electronic Journal of Knowledge Management consider papers presented at this conference for further development and publication. ECIC 2017 is being held at the University Institute of Lisbon (ISCTE-IUL) on 67 April, 2017 in Lisbon, Portugal and the Conference Co-Chairs are Professor Ilídio Tomás Lopes and Professor Rogério Serrasqueiro.

    Conference Topics

Intellectual capital (IC) is generally defined as the intangible value of a business, and it incorporates its people (Human Capital), the value inherent in its relationships (Relational capital), and the knowledge and systems that form the foundation of the business (Structural capital). There has been, and continues to be, much discussion over how intellectual capital differs from intangibles, intangible assets or intellectual property.

In 1999, the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development convened an international symposium in Amsterdam to deliberate on the experience, issues and prospects on measuring and reporting intellectual capital. At the same time a number of European Institutions were collaborating to produce a common framework for the identification, measurement and control of intangibles as well as to suggest criteria for the disclosure of information on the intangible determinants of the firm’s value. This activity, known better as the Meritum Project, produced a report in April 2001.

More than a decade on, at ECIC 2017 we want to look beyond these guidelines to showcase the state of the art research in the field of Intellectual Capital. This year we are particularly interested in the application of intellectual capital in practice and the links between theory and practice.
