  • Education and Social Change: Towards a Real Human Development

    If it is true, as it is, that the relationship between Education and Development doesn’t need any further demonstration, nevertheless it remains true that education unlikely reaches its goals coherently with a true development based on human values. In facts, such a perspective – that is intrinsic to education – can unlikely be combined with the merely to-economic-profit-aimed objectives, that are promoted by the current world trend. Such a world trend, in facts, tends to neglect the cultivation in the individuals of critical thinking, empathy and solidarity.

    It happens too often that schools, in accomplishing their duty to transmit the savoirs, focus exclusively on science and technology, overshadowing arguments linked to citizenship, international friendship and humanities. The result is that we have more easily good technicians and engineers that basically fail in understanding the topic of the «learning together», a goal for which economics, for sure, is important but not sufficient. Many countries can exhibit a high economic index even if they remain internally affected by problems of inequality, emargination, individual and social depression and violence.

    Social crisis, rebellions and multiple insurrections, some of which occur here in our Mediterranean macro-region and beyond, are a clear demonstration of our incapacity to simply form the human being to human values and to inhence the educational goals of the citizenship and peace. We know that educating human beings means taking them progressively towards their full development, a development that includes an equitable redistribution of richnesses, a just distribution of powers through the mechanisms of solidarity among individuals inside the same society and among the citizens belonging to other societies.

    The deep meaning of a real development above all is human. It includes both the economic development and the essential values of the equity among humans, the former being at the service of the latter.

    The development consists of the capacity of the individuals to function towards the personal as well as the social transformations ; in that way the development should orientate the individuals in order to ameliorate them, adjust the economic inequalities, stop the unjustice, the intolerance and the racism.

    We all hold huge means to reach such an overall goal. We enjoy a multiplication of communication tools, a great facility in moving goods and citizens, and a performing trade system. How to use all that for the best ? how to put all that at the service of a human development, that is a development that creates « complete » human beings, responsable about themselves, the others and the environment?

    How to transform the norms of wild competition, creators of unjustice, precariousness, inequality, fear of the Other, unsecurity, unhealth, stereotypes, prejudices, discrimination, multiple tensions and conflicts both inside society and among societies?

    How to move towards an augured change, a change that will focus the individuals themselves, their capacity to choose, to act, to understand and to preserve their human and natural environment?

    It is towards those question that the debates at the interior of the 6th MESCE conference will move. We interrogate the nature of the links that exist between Education and Change just when Change is, from one side, worried and suffered, and, from the other, demanded. We will try to understand in which ways Education can help to change societies and to favour a real human development, so that such a Change can be safely transmitted to the future generations.
