The 16th Annual Congress of the International Society for Medical Shockwave Treatment (ISMST) 2013 is taking place in Salzburg, Austria June 27 - 29, 2013. One day earlier – June 26th – the Instructional Certification Course will also be held at this meeting due to the enormous interest during the past meetings and to continue with the high treatment quality standards among shockwave therapists.
In the past meetings we learned a lot of the basic mechanism on the cellular and molecular level affected by shockwave treatment which significantly improved our understanding of this technology. This certainly supports us in adapting treatment specifications in the various indications by translating these findings into the clinical environment. However, we are still on the early stages to understand this complex interplay of shockwaves with the biological system which on the other hand makes it also a highly attractive field of research.
It is the firm conviction of the society that expert knowledge exchange as well as amicable and excellent cooperation which can be found throughout our society are key elements to succeed in this ambition. As young investigators are the experts of tomorrow we should continue inspiring these young and enthusiastic people to participate in the scientific advancement of this fascinating therapeutic tool.
In parallel to the great efforts accomplished by the basic research community the consolidated indications gained further clinical evidence and become in some fields treatment of first choice. Especially this year meeting venue gives us the great opportunity to review and discuss the recent research and clinical progress and the future perspectives as it is exclusively reserved for our congress participants.
Conference Aims and Topics
The Congress of the ISMST is the official Annual Meeting of international shockwave therapists, scientists and medical companies. The aim is a knowledge exchange in the field of medical shockwave treatment.
During 3 days, scientific research results and clinical studies are laid out in individual presentations, expressing the author's conclusions as a result of their work in universities, laboratories, clinics and practices.
The presentations comprise different topics:
- Basic research (cell and animal level)
- Clinical studies of the standard indications and empirically tested clinical uses (tendinopathies, bone and skin lesions, myofascial syndromes)
- Clinical studies of exceptional and experimental indications (heart, nerve tissue, cartilage etc.)
- Case reports
- New treatment modalities
- New technical evolutions of the devices
Each session is opened by a keynote lecture, giving an overview of the sessions's subject. The sessions include a discussion of each presentation. At the end of the congress a roundtable discussion of the keynote speakers sums the results up. The abstracts are published online.
Best Paper Award
We cordially invite you to submit abstracts. It is also a great pleasure to announce for this year meeting an award endowed with € 500 for the best paper presented. A scientific commission will evaluate all the presented papers and the award will be handed over on Saturday, June 29th. We also encourage each of our members to take advantage of renewing your membership and all who are interested in ESWT to apply for ISMST membership to continue the growth of our scientific family.
